“C-H-E-E-R, what does that spell? Cheer, YES.”
That is the sound the cheerleaders make when the teams score points. Proviso East cheerleaders have a lot of school spirit. When you walk through the halls of the school, you’ll see the cheerleaders walking around in either their cheer uniforms or school merch. Do you ever wonder about the cheerleaders?
At Proviso East High School no one has more school spirit than the cheerleading squad. During all school events the cheerleaders are the ones that you can’t miss. They’ve won awards such as first place in competitions, they’ve qualified for state, and have shown how hard they’ve worked.
People have many opinions on cheerleaders and the stereotype of them being “sweet and positive”. Isis Shearrill, a senior, said, “Even talking to one you can just tell she’s a cheerleader. Her attitude just fits it.”
The cheerleaders are sweet and positive in all reality. They do a really good job of being positive and making Proviso East look like an amazing school.
The cheerleaders would sure be lost without their captain Aniyah Redmond, a hard-working senior. Redmond said, “We may have troubles but at the end of the day we got each other as a team and as a family. We all get in a huddle and spread motivational words to each other.” This just proves the way the cheerleaders can be professional and loving all at the same time.
Cheerleading is a very challenging sport. They practice almost every day and prepare like no other. Cheerleaders at Proviso East practice tumbling. Not all cheerleaders were blessed with flexibility, so they practice it. Also, they must learn over 100 cheers with more coming in each year.
Becoming a cheerleader takes a lot of time, dedication, and more than a week to learn cheers and dances. Along with being a cheerleader comes having a big smile, loud voice, and peppy attitude. It almost looks like it comes so natural for them.
There would be no cheer team without a coach. Ranisha Green AKA (Coach Green) is the Proviso East Cheerleading coach. Redmond, the cheer captain, said, “Coach Green takes all our well beings into consideration.”
Green has said, “The girls have practiced long and hard to get to where they are now. I’m very proud.”
The squad is very good at spreading school spirit. Whether they are on the sidelines or not, they participate in football, basketball, and other school events, and they wear their uniforms with pride. Just looking at them makes you want to get in the spirit too. By how excited the cheerleaders can get the crowds you know they’re good at what they do.
Many students and staff appreciate the positivity that the cheerleaders bring to the school. As senior Vivian Martinez said, “They’re our supporters. They do everything in their might to help us succeed.” Doesn’t that just make you wonder what else the cheerleaders are capable of doing?
The girls on the team are great cheerleaders and are able to spread the cheerful spirit to their other peers. They uplift and influence students, staff, and parents to join them in sports and activities. Come out to support the cheerleaders and the team this season.
