Social media has become an addiction to kids ages 10 and up. Social media is making kids act out of the norm. For example, many kids lash out if they get their devices taken away and act out of their usual self.
“How can we fix this problem?” is the question on every parent’s mind. Karla Romero, who has a 10-year-old son, said, “My son spends so much time playing on his tablet, he hardly ever goes to play outside.” Romero has also stated when she tries to take away his device, he lashes out and acts out which she says is not like him to do. She believes social media has a role to play in this.
People don’t realize the great impact that too much social media and screen time can have on young kids. Too much social media can cause kids to become less social and rely on social media to have friends and connect with people. This is bad because every kid should be socializing with other kids their age outside of the screen.
Social media is also very impactful when it comes to their sleep schedule and their mental health. One consequence is they are more likely to start comparing themselves to other people that they see on social media, which is very bad for their mental health.
Romero’s son has stated how he has stayed up late during school nights because he was on the phone talking to friends and playing video games.
What Is the Positive of Kids Using Social Media?
Now while kids using social media is not always a good thing, there is some good that can come out of it.
Kids being on social media at a young age can help them become more creative and informed in real world issues that are going on. This is a good thing because kids can reach into their creative side and find out things that interest them.
Letting kids use social media is also a good thing because it allows them to stay in touch with their friends and family, while also allowing them to open new connections with people.
Allowing and teaching kids how to properly use social media and the internet can be beneficial because it can help them out in the future whether that be for schoolwork or a future career that requires more digital work to be done.
Allowing kids to use social media and the internet can allow them to join clubs or spaces that share their same interest. This is good because it allows kids to come out of their comfort space and become more sociable if they aren’t already.
